Using the Novette laser system as a pump, some scientists at Lawrence Livermore have achieved laser action in thin films of yttrium and selenium. The yttrium films emitted coherent X rays at 155 angstroms; the selenium film at 206 and 209 angstroms. A Princeton scientist has also reported stimulated emission (although not true lasing) from a carbon target pumped by a CO2 laser, and expects lasing in a few weeks. -------
