I have observed the same phenomenon at sunset on one occasion. It was in the winter, and at about 2000 meters altitude. I assumed at the time that the altitude had something to do with the effect: perhaps something to do with the air's density? Another possibility is reflection, but all this is just guessing. Several have suggested that the rosy fingers of dawn can be created by the gaps between shadows of large objects on the horizon. I've seen this effect at sunset and attributed it to the shadows of thunderheads too far away to see directly. Lew Mammel, Jr. ihnp4!ihuxr!lew
