[net.physics] rosy fingers

majka@ubc-vision.CDN (Marc Majka) (11/02/84)

I have observed the same phenomenon at sunset on one occasion. It was in
the winter, and at about 2000 meters altitude. I assumed at the time that
the altitude had something to do with the effect: perhaps something to do
with the air's density? Another possibility is reflection, but all this is
just guessing. Any experts?

Several have suggested that the rosy fingers of dawn can be created
by the gaps between shadows of large objects on the horizon. I've seen
this effect at sunset and attributed it to the shadows of thunderheads
too far away to see directly.
