Car exhaust is visible because there is condensed water inside the tailpipe and catalytic converter and until this water is expelled, it appears in the exhaust as vapor/steam/water. I think this is true. It certainly seems plausible. Rafi Esrael (reply to Dan Lieman, at iles@venus, or anywhere at UC Berkeley Berknet, it will get to me eventually).
