Yesterday, the SJ Mercury news and several local TV stations posted the death of Frank Oppenheimer. Frank, the brother of J. Robert Oppenheimer, was also a physicist at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project. He was blacklisted during the 1950s for activities before WWII. He took up farming in Colorado. He returned to physics and eventually founded the San Francisco Exploratorium ["The Palace of Delights" on Nova] which stands as an inspiration of science to the young and young at heart. The importance of the latter, providing for the future and instilling enlightenment, is difficult to describe, but so very essential. Frank will be sorely missed. --eugene miya NASA Ames Research Center {hplabs,ihnp4,dual,hao,vortex}!ames!aurora!eugene emiya@ames-vmsb.ARPA
