[net.physics] Accuracy of timing secondary particle formation in p-p collisions

gts@dmcnh.UUCP (Guy The Schafer) (07/31/85)

In current collsion detectors what is the timeframe to which the creation of
secondary particles can be pinpointed. From a description I read of the
main detector on the Proton-Antiproton Collider at CERN (_The Particle
Connection_ by Dr. Christine Sutton), it doesn't seem it would pinpoint the
moment of creation to better than a few microseconds. Is this true? Are
there detectors with a better timing mechanism?
We're going to have to better if we want to find those pesky tau-neutrinos.
