[net.physics] Hear, Hear to Dan Rokhsar

Like Dan I too would like to see more restrictions on the
contents of net.physics. If people wish to discuss mental
telepathy and the like they should be somewhere else. I, for
one, would like to see more discussions of the real issues -
alternate views of QM, supersymmetry theory and the like.
It seems too bad that we get a ton of trash - I am sure
that there are some people out there that think and research
	before they start writing.

Real issues?? I like discussions about mental telepathy, IF they would
suggest some sort of basis in physics (a model) that could explain it.
It certainly seems like the physics basis for a number of concepts developed
long after the general psyche (i. e. science fiction stories)
described such concepts quite accurately. Take for example the laser.
It now has been seriously proposed as a kind of death ray. It is
almost that if such a thing is conceived it will be. And, maybe more
thought should be given to assuming that "telepathy, spirits, ball
lightning" do exist and we should play the thought game of devising
the physics to explain it. Then we can devise a technique to
reproduce it for all to know or experience.

Super symetries seem to be like describing planetary motions with epicycles.
But to each his own. Keep up the interesting garbage. It will disappear
when people tire of it.

Really! What has laser to do with telepathy?? As I recall, it was
developed from maser by conventional methods and theories -
QM and Quantum Theory of Light.
The problem with postings on 'psychic phenomena' is not the subject but lack
of mental discipline and understanding the method of physics (that's what
should guide the character of the net physics). There are no 'non-physical
forces' - and realm of physics includes the living and thinking and phantasy-
ing processes. If we could indeed demonstrate PK, it would involve a
physical field - and (and this the psychic fans often do'nt see) may not be
relevant to basic physics. There is a long way from quarks to atoms to the
 biophysics of the human brain...
As a very minimum - when you make 'long jumps' - a far reaching conclusions -
maintain the same self-critical faculty when writing about organic or anorganic phenomena and whether writing about something based on 'scanty evidence' or
 about an established effect.
That in itself would reduce amount of junk material.
