More kibbitzing material! > Fall, 1901 Moves -- > > England: [F NORTH SEA-denmark], F NORWEGIAN SEA convoys > A edinburgh-NORWAY > ** 1 Build ** And they trusted the French! At least the political situation does not leave England isolated; he will have a useful ally in Russia (though he is likely to be Russia's SECOND favorite ally). With Russian cooperation, Denmark will still fall, and Franco-German attacks are unlikely to really tell before Germany begins a serious collapse. England, however, will be on the defensive for quite a while. > Germany: [A KIEL-denmark], A ruhr-BELGIUM, [F HOLLAND-north sea] > ** 1 Build ** The Franco-German alliance is a noble gamble, though it might have been wiser to turn French attentions southwards and enlist England as an ally (offering him Scandinavia). Still, Germany can regain Munich, has a valuable friend (though he will sorely feel the vacuum on the Danube), and will lead an exciting life... > Russia: F gulf of bothnia-SWEDEN, A silesia-MUNICH, A ukraine-RUMANIA, > F BLACK SEA supports A ukraine-rumania > ** 3 Builds ** Russia grows exponentially! An impressive, albeit tenuous, display. It is doubtful that the Russians can hold Munich, but they can make life very interesting for all by retreating (when the time comes) to the Ruhr, or Burgundy. This will drive the opposing alliance up the wall. > Turkey: [A BULGARIA-serbia], [F CONSTANTINOPLE-bulgaria(sc)], > A smyrna-ANKARA > ** 1 Build ** Tactical error. Even if the low probability move to Serbia were to succeed, Bulgaria could be picked up at liesure; moreover, the probability was much better for a move to Greece. Either way, Turkey squandered the initiative by failing to order F Con -> Aeg, and now Italy may have gotten the means to punish such an error. > Austria-Hun.: Civil Disorder, F ALBANIA holds, A SERBIA holds, > A GALICIA holds > ** 1 Lost ** Poor sport. If the Austrians can't win, they evidently will take their pail and go home. > Italy: F ionian sea-TUNIS, A trieste-VIENNA, A venice-TRIESTE > ** 3 Builds ** Austrian anemia has turned what would have otherwise been a terrible blunder into a brilliance; Rome is richly rewarded by Vienna's lack of righteous anger. Instead of being steamrolled by the Eastern powers, Italy will likely be near a match for Turkey and whatever Russian forces are available. This may tempt the Tsar into cooperating with the Italians rather than the Turks. > France: F mid-atlantic ocean-IRISH SEA, A spain-PORTUGAL, > A gascony-SPAIN > ** 2 Builds ** A bit premature, I'd say. France cannot yet threaten a convoy, and England can build in Liverpool. I don't see why this could not have waited at least until Spring 1902 (perhaps even better, 1903), when either an army could be landed in Wales or Clyde or even Liverpool in the Fall. England would certainly have built on the North Sea had France given them the opportunity. Overall: Some astute diplomacy by Germany (goading the French attack) puts them right back in the pack. Austrian character deficiencies turn Italy's position into one of the strongest from one of the weakest. Turkey loses some steam. Russia makes a flashy, albeit superficial, showing. England is surprised. France's timing could use improvement. David Rubin
