The eighth and final set of games is nearly over, and the postseason situation still hasn't completely taken shape. I'll describe what's happening after the up-to-the-minute standings: Baltimore 6-2 .750 - Los Angeles 5-2 .714 1/2 Boston 5-3 .625 1 San Francisco 5-3 .625 1 St. Louis 5-3 .625 1 Montreal 4-4 .500 2 Cincinnati 3-5 .375 3 New York 3-5 .375 3 Milwaukee 2-5 .286 3 1/2 Pittsburgh 1-7 .125 5 In the not-yet-completed game, Milwaukee and Los Angeles are tied 3-3 in the 11th. Should the Dodgers win, they will be tied with Baltimore for the top spot. Since both of those teams have the same manager/owner, I would see no need to play out the championship series between them. If Peter wants to play it out and post/mail in the results, he is welcome to. Should the Brewers win, we will be faced with a four-way tie for second. As the comissioner, I will order a four-way single-elimination playoff between them under the following conditions: 1) It will be assumed that a substantial period has passed between the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs. As a result, all injuries, etc. will be considered expired. Teams will start the playoffs with the top of their pitching rotation. We want the teams playing in their best form. 2) Boston will play at St. Louis, and San Francisco at Los Angeles. Managers: get your starting lineups and late strategic adjustments in! The winners will then meet, with their #2 pitchers starting, with the home team being whoever was the visitor in the regular season meeting between the two clubs. Hence, Boston would be on the road, Los Angeles at home, and San Francisco at St. Louis. 3) The winner will play Baltimore 4 of 7 for the title. Again, should Los Angeles be the survivor, I won't bother with it. As often is the case with preliminary rounds, pitching rotations may be messed up, so the Orioles' opponent will have to start with their #3 pitcher. The Orioles, having had the better record will have the option of playing at home for games 1, 2, 6, and 7 or games 3, 4, and 5. I will be going away for 3-4 weeks, so don't expect any further reports till about the third week of August. Included will be the box score of the Brewer - Dodger game and final regular season statistics.
