Pardon me for changing the presentation of the orders, but I, for one, am made dizzy by the way they are being posted. Capitalized orders fail -- if they were holds, the unit is dislodged, if they were supports, the support was cut, if they were convoys, the convoy is disrupted, and if they were moves, the unit doesn't. [u] = unordered. [nso] = no such order. There were no retreats. Russia: A Gal - Rum F Sev S A Gal - Rum F BOT - SWE A UKR - WAR Russia does what she must. Perhaps she could have confused the issue in the north by ordering F Bot -> Bal, but there's nothing to criticize in actual Russian actions. Under the circumstances, Russia could hardly be blamed for attempting to patch things up with Austria by ordering A Gal into Rum rather than A Ukr. Despite looming disaster, Russia did her best -- and is rewarded when the Turks fail to submit the orders that would probably have cost Russia Rumania and the Black Sea. Providence appears to have only delayed Russia's decline, however, unless Russia can capitalize on diplomatic openings now created in Berlin and especially Constantinople. Italy: A Apu - Tun F Ion C A Apu - Tun A Trl - Mun Bravo! The logical completion of a strong year for the tight Austro-Italian alliance. Italy serves herself AND the balance of power in the West, as it appeared that an Anglo-German alliance was in the offing. Even though their grip on Munich is tenuous, the Italians have done very well, indeed. It will be a long time before any Western power can threaten the Mediterranean. The puzzle, though, is Italian policy towards Turkey. Evidently, their Austrian partners have reached a modus vivendi with the Turks. Italy would naturally prefer the emasculation of the Eastern naval threat. It is likely that she will move to dispatch Turkey with Austria's blessing once the Turks have given Vienna the leg up on Russia. The immediate threat of a Lepanto, though, may drive Turkey into alliance with Russia before Austria can fully cope. Is Rome undercutting Vienna intentionally? Or have the Turks unintentionally helped themselves by NOT attacking Russia, as it appears the Austro-Italians are already sharpening their carving knives? Germany: F DEN - SWE A Ruh - Hol A SIL - WAR I told you so. Germany should have read my prophetic tract on German openings, which predicted that even should Germany actually begin with its Western neighbors' good will, an attack upon Russia will create such weaknesses in the West that even an angelic neighbor will be sorely tested. Germany misjudged where her enemies lay, and must now make haste to repair the damage. Because Germany diddled in Silesia, rather than trying to gain all three bordering neutrals, the loss of Munich is serious rather than merely an inconvenience. The difficulty will now be in treading the wire between London and St. Petersburg: the former has probably been promised support into Sweden, while it is in Germany's interests to disengage from the latter (to retake Munich). As Germany now needs England more than the other way around, it looks likely that the Germans will continue, albeit uncomfortably, the two front war. England: F Nrg - Nwy F NTH - BEL A Edi Holds England seems likely to have promised Belgium to Germany in exchange for Sweden. An eminently fair arrangement. Perhaps, though, England should examine the costs of preventing Russia from taking Sweden, especially if the Turks do not defect from the Austro-German attack upon Russia. Why is the army still at Edinburgh? To answer my own question, because England seeks to reassure Russia. This may mean that England is satisfied with Norway (ha!), wishes to maneuver for a larger attack on Russia, or wishes to limit a future war with Russia to the very specific matter of the disposition of Sweden. Austria: F Alb - Gre A SER S TURK A BUL - RUM [nso] A BUD S TURK A BUL - RUM [nso] Tidy. Austria has evidently secured the friendship of all her neighbors save her intended victim. Unfortunately, it appears that the Italians are now ready to launch an eastward attack upon Turkey BEFORE Turkey is committed to an attack on Russia. And Vienna worked so hard to set St. Petersburg up... France: A PIC - BEL A Bur S Ital A Trl - Mun F Mid - Por Inefficient. France guessed wrong, and probably guessed wrong because of pressure from the Italians. A Bur wasted its move. France faced no attacks from any of its neighbors save for a half-hearted English swipe at Belgium, yet managed only one build. Makes one wonder if the Italians didn't set up the stand-off in Belgium to keep France dependent on Italy. Turkey: A Bul [u] F Ank [u] A Arm [u] The most brilliant unintentional, but constructive, use of civil disorder in 1901! Turkey would likely have participated in the Austro-German attack on Russia, bringing the Tsarist collapse about quickly, just as the Italians mobilized for a convoy toward Syria. Now there is time to reconsider destroying the only power that could aid Turkey against an Austro-Italian alliance --- or demand that the Italians NOT build a fleet in Naples.
