[net.games.pbm] "Boardman" numbers for EMAIL dippy games.

msj@gitpyr.UUCP (Mike St. Johns) (08/05/85)

A short while ago someone asked where to get a Boardman number for his
EMAIL diplomacy game. He got no replies. For those of you who don't know,
a Boardman number is used to identify a particular Play By Mail diplomacy
game. The numbers are issued by the boardman number custodian (I have
no idea who is handling this task now). The number consists of
the year followed by a one or two character identifier. The games
are number sequentially. I.e. 1978A, 1978B...1978Z, 1978AA, 1978AB etc.

My proposal is that we set up a net mail game number custodian. To get
your number, you simply send a specially formatted email note and
you receive in turn your number. The GM would be expected to forward the
final results of the game in the format of a summary table of supply centers,
countries, and player names to the custodian for archiving.

I would volunteer for this job, however I am leaving the academic community
for GOVT who are rather touchy about the uses of their computing resour0es.

Mike StJohns, (4 weeks and counting).

(StJohns01 will now be known as E1985F as I know of 5 other games started
this year!!! Not really, but you get the idea....) Mike

Actually, since I brought this up a while ago (and I didn't get any
response either), I guess it's up to *me* to volunteer. Oddly enough,
before I even got to the end of the article where Mike suggested that the
numbering system be E1985A and so on, I thought of the same thing; I take
this as devine edict that this is the format numbers should have.

OK, from now on, if you start a new email game, write to me and
I'll give you a number. Actually, it might be a good idea if the people
who are currently running games also get numbers. I'll try and find out
who the current BNC is and coordinate with him/her.
