As most news readers know, decvax has been in deplorable shape lately. The switchover to 4.1cBSD complicated matters, especially since the 4.1c uucp was totally broken by the turkeys at Berkeley, but the real problem is more general: decvax is badly overloaded. In response to this, the New England part of the Usenet backbone has split, with linus (Mitre Corp. outside Boston) taking over part of the load from decvax. We are in the process of having our news feed switched from decvax to linus as a result. I expect we will retain our connection to decvax for mail, but if the linus link works well we will cease getting news from decvax. Linus should not be subject to the periodic overload catastrophes that kept hitting decvax, and is better-equipped in other ways (more lines, better modems). Also, linus (unlike decvax) has had news batching operational for some time, and we are going to get our feed batched, which should massively reduce the phone bills. Stay tuned for progress reports. P.S.: Utzoo is now running news 2.10, so (finally!) you should be seeing people's full names on news articles. Henry Spencer utzoo!henry
