[ont.uucp] linus outage, continued

henry@utzoo.UUCP (Henry Spencer) (03/14/84)

The outage on the utzoo-linus link now looks more serious than it did
at first, because it turns out that the watmath-clyde news link isn't
a full link: watmath doesn't pass Canadian news outward to clyde.
This is the reason why news from hereabouts hasn't been getting out
to the net as a whole. I hadn't thought the linus outage too serious,
because I'd thought the stuff was getting out through watmath anyway.
(Redundancy was presented to me as one of the major reasons for the
watmath-clyde hookup.) Well, I was wrong, the watmath folks didn't
do it that way. Argh.

I will try to find out what's wrong at linus ASAP. Stay tuned.

A bit of history:
When we started receiving news from clyde, we forwarded it to utzoo to
provide a redundant feed for Ontario - this is good, and has no bad side
effects. But we didn't feed news received from utzoo on to clyde because
we didn't know how much of the news which originally came via linus that
would include, and clyde doesn't have an infinite amount of dialer time.
It seems that this turned out to be a non-problem, since clyde seems
to deliver stuff reliably and early compared to linus and so the reverse
traffic would be low. But everyone here was off doing other things and
not paying attention to news, so nothing got changed. And we didn't know
anything was wrong in Toronto.

Anyway, watmath has now started forwarding all of the net.* articles
coming in from utzoo on to clyde, effective Wednesday morning.
