[ont.uucp] ihnp4

henry@utzoo.UUCP (Henry Spencer) (12/19/85)

People sending mail via ihnp4, especially utzoo!ihnp4, be warned that
ihnp4 is acting strangely. We haven't been able to get through to them
for several days, they haven't called us either, and their mail router
is doing peculiar things. Our uucp is very patient and will hang on to
outgoing mail for a long time, so nothing is likely to get lost, but don't
expect fast response on mail through ihnp4. I am trying to find out what
is going on.

As many of you may have already noticed in net.news.config, it seems that
ihnp4 has been having serious hardware problems. It is not clear that the
problems are over; certainly the backlog here hasn't cleared yet. (That does
mean that mail going via ...!utzoo!ihnp4!... didn't get lost in the crash of
their spool filesystem,though.)

The utzoo-ihnp4 link is experiencing another of its periodic outages.
Expect delays on mail routed that way.  No idea what the problem is;
nothing on this end has changed.

In true Murphy's-Law fashion, just after I posted my note the utzoo-ihnp4
bottleneck started to clear. Maybe somebody went in and kicked ihnp4.
Anyway, mail seems to be moving again.

A word to the wise: ihnp4 is overloaded, and isn't getting the kind of
tender-loving-care maintenance it used to get. Better to send your mail
by other paths, if you can.
