[ont.uucp] UUCP Domains

alanm@dvlmarv.UUCP (02/21/87)

After inquiring about domain registration with Mark Horton, I
was directed to Frank Pronk (ubc-vision!pronk) about the .CAN
domain. He sent me the following reply about .CAN.

Please send responses to ubc-vision!pronk, not to me.

(Note) .CAN seems to suit our purposes since we're not an educational
institution. I realize that there may be some sites that are
already using .COM but send in your replies anyway.

So do I.

So how about it sports fans ? Could you send him your replies?

Perhaps I can clarify the current situation w.r.t. use of .CAN a bit...

[ Aside: .EDU et al are not "the USA's name space", although to some people
they may appear to be. ]

Frank sent me map entries for UBC hosts and MPR hosts that had .CAN
in them (as in cs.ubc.can e.g.). This presented a problem, since:

There is no .CAN domain currently in existence. There should be one
Real Soon now (a few weeks?).

Advertising such names while the domain isn't real, is not a good thing.

Chances are that the .CAN domain will not accept hosts or simple organizations
for second level domains. Therefore the names chosen a priori may not
be valid anyway in the final scheme of things.

For these reasons I had to comment out references to .CAN in the entries,
before adding them to the map (giving Frank an explanation, and the offer
to list the entries under some other existing domain).

If UUCP site sysadmins have questions or concerns regarding these issues,
feel free to mail me. I shall try to respond or relay as appropriate, as my
time permits.

I for one am willing to be part of the Canadian domain, esp. if the US
name keepers are going to charge money to register. The only problem
I see is where should the offical version of the name space be kept.
One last question, is it .CAN or .CDN?

Remember that the Canadian name keepers are going to have expenses too --
if nothing else, it's not safe to rely on volunteer labor indefinitely as
the workload rises -- so Canadian registration might end up costing money
too. There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

> One last question, is it .CAN or .CDN?

It'll have to be .CAN for the national domain, since some presumptuous folks
out on the west coast have already used CDN for one particular network.
