While DEC was in investigating a memory problem on "dciem", a nice little puff of smoke came from a board in the computer. As it turns out, the board that got hit was our DN11 (auto-dialer). According to the information that I have, the 4-board set (yes, 4 boards to control up to 4 ACU's; the wonders of 60's technology!), this cannot be replaced before sometime in January. As a result, "dciem" cannot call any systems. This does not affect any of our dial-in lines - these will be working as normal. As far as I know, all of our UUCP links are (oops! were) bi-directional so nobody should get cut off; the news and mail should still get through (neither sleet nor snow nor dead ACU can stay these bytes from their appointed routes.) -- Tim Pointing, DCIEM {decvax|ihnp4|watmath}!utzoo!dciem!tim or uw-beaver!utcsri!dciem!tim or uunet!mnetor!dciem!tim or dciem!tim@zorac.arpa
