In case somebody hasn't heard, Telebit extended its cheap Usenet rate on Trailblazer super-fast modems by three months, to the end of March. I don't know for certain that Telebit Canada has done the same, but I'd be very surprised if they hadn't. There is no longer any need to worry about whether there will be someone around to talk to at high speed; several major Ontario sites already have them, and others are working on getting them. They are the cat's meow for news and heavy mail traffic. Even on utzoo, with its modest CPU and old (i.e. slow) kernel, we're seeing rates of 600-800 bytes/second fairly consistently when things are halfway quiet. Although configuring one is, um, quite an exercise, and I have minor complaints about documentation and whatnot, basically I'm very pleased with ours. I wish I had more of them. -- Those who do not understand Unix are | Henry Spencer @ U of Toronto Zoology condemned to reinvent it, poorly. | {allegra,ihnp4,decvax,utai}!utzoo!henry
