[ont.uucp] CNews status?

ptrubey@sce.UUCP (Phil Trubey) (02/17/88)

Since there seem to be some CNews users out here in Ontario...

What is the current status of CNews? Is it still a shaky alpha
version? Or has it progressed to 'less than a week of fiddling
before relative stability' stage? What systems does it run on
(We've got a System V Microport (gasp!))?

The reason I ask is that I have the dubious pleasure of bring up news
again on my Microport box, and I was wondering how long away a
stable version of CNews was...

It reached pretty much that stage very shortly after the alpha release.
If you consider the five C News Bulletins to be part of said release,
the alpha release was solid and runnable right from the start. It's not
well documented, and figuring out how to install it can be a chore, but
it works well despite some remaining quirks. There are parts of the Toronto
net where it's hard to find a B news now.

Most anything. It runs better on a system which has dbm, but the crude
dbm simulation we provide runs (I am told) surprisingly well.
