People who have Telebit Trailblazers with anything earlier than the BA4.00 firmware should upgrade. Apart from a striking improvement in interactive response (see comp.dcom.modems for my comments on this), 4.00 appears to fix an annoying bug in which the modem occasionally thinks it's off-hook when in fact it is on-hook. If you have +++ recognition disabled, the only way to shake the modem out of this state is to power-cycle it. The firmware upgrade costs something like $99/modem normally, but given that this problem is a legitimate bug, if you're willing to go via California and wait a few days, you can get the new ROMs free. (At least, if your Trailblazers are still in warranty, which most will be. Actually, the way it works is that you get the new ROMs and they'll bill you unless you send the old ones back reasonably promptly.) You'll need someone who is at home enough with hardware to change socketed chips, and he preferably should have a suitable extraction tool, because those sockets really have a death grip on those chips. -- Those who do not understand Unix are | Henry Spencer @ U of Toronto Zoology condemned to reinvent it, poorly. | {allegra,ihnp4,decvax,utai}!utzoo!henry
