[ont.uucp] attcan feeding from uunet

dave@lsuc.uucp (David Sherman) (05/11/88)

attcan is now bringing in news from uunet and feeding it
to lsuc and utzoo (though the attcan<->utzoo news link isn't
solid yet). attcan from uunet is via Trailblazer and is working
fine (more than fine, if our uucp logs are any indication --
according to uunet's latest postings in news.lists we're well
over 3Mb/day average now).

By the way, is comp.binaries.ibm.pc tremendously popular
in Toronto? It's accounting for almost 10% of the net traffic now.

Of late there has been a lot of drek in comp.binaries.ibm.pc but the
new moderator is now on board. Maybe we should give things a chance to
settle down as a result of that and look at it again in a month or so.

Great!

c.b.i.pc has just gone moderated - which should alleviate the volume
problem a lot.

Well, it is time you heard from me.

attcan is indeed on-line now and is Trailblazing with uunet and utzoo. lsuc
is still 1200. Everything seems to be stable. I will be willing to take on
new feeds (Trailblazers ONLY) around mid June. This delay is due to
equipment arrival dates for my new computer room. When done attcan will
have:
	16 2400 baud AT&T 4024 modems. 10 on one hunt group, 6 direct dial.
2 Telebit Trailblazer Plus modems on direct dial numbers.
	over 2 Gigabytes of storage (6 X 300, 8 X 147 Meg).

Extras include:

9.6 dedicated service to Montreal and Ottawa - multiplexed into
32 9600 baud virtual circuits each.

I will be looking into propagating netnews to those cities later this
summer. No promises right now.

'Til later,

didn't know you! (;-))

ps. I know! I know! Add it to the private map files...

Yes, it is. Given that AT&T Canada has expressed an interest in becoming a
major USENET node, the feed from uunet should be unrestricted. The utgpu
feed will continue to remain unrestricted.

Yes, ibm.pc.binaries is very popular, but perhaps at U of T we could make
more use of archive servers ... At present, the U o T UTCS Bulletin Board
is quite good at decoding and posting binaries to the board; this saves a
lot of work pasting together, cutting etc. and decoding.

Just to clarify - I will take on full feeds of Trailblazers only but will
take mail feeds at any speed. Depending on statistics, I may take on 2400
baud feeds later this summer.
