A new feature, the USENET compact directory, has been posted to newsgroup net.news.map, in 9 separate articles. This directory will eventually replace the map currently being posted monthly to that newsgroup. The directory is organized by state, and contains not only site name and connection information, but also the organization name, location, and information about the contact person. The directory is only as good as the information that goes into it, and there are a number of sites that we don't have any information for. Also, we are sure that our information for many sites is out of date. So we request that each site check the information we have for that site, and mail corrections to cbosgd!map. If a field is blank, this means the information is missing, and we would like someone to tell us what goes in that slot, even if it's "the contact person doesn't have a phone". The UUCP slot is deliberately blank - we intend to (possibly) include UUCP connections, for mail routing purposes, but we haven't done it yet, and we are not requesting UUCP connection information at this time. For anyone ambitious enough to print out the directory, we would appreciate any and all corrections you can make, about your site and any other sites you notice mistakes in. We want to make the map as accurate as possible. Karen and Mark Horton cbosg!cbosgd!map ucbvax!cbosgd!map

This is the current map of Usenet, incorporating all changes received by the date given. Please send corrections (and all changes to the configuration of Usenet) to "cbosgd!map". A blank entry means that the information for that site is unknown - if you see a blank entry you know the answer to, please let us know. Anything you would like to add to make information more specific is welcome - for example, if a site is just listed as "Bell Telephone Laboratories", we would prefer to list them as "Bell Labs, Columbus Operating System Group". We simply don't have the information to fill in for most sites. Usenet is defined as all sites receiving newsgroup net.general. A Usenet link between two sites is one that net.general is sent over. Note that this is different from a UUCP link, over which mail and file transfers may occur but not necessarily news. The format of the map lists several mail-style header lines for each site. The lines are Name: the official site name, with optional nicknames Organization: the name of the company, university, or group Contact: the name of the Usenet contact person for the site Phone: the telephone number of the contact person Postal-Address: the paper mailing address of the contact person Electronic-Address: for the contact person Usenet: neighbors this site sends net.general to UUCP: sites for which there is a UUCP link. Continuation lines begin with a blank or tab. A blank line separates each site entry. The UUCP line in most cases is blank, allowing for future expansion. We are not currently collecting UUCP data, so please do not send UUCP additions. The map is organized geographically, dividing the world into several regions: Washington state and western Canada Oregon and the northern Rocky Mountain states California and Nevada The southwestern US The southeastern US including Missouri The midwestern US Illinois The eastern seaboard New Jersey New England Eastern Canada Europe Data for Europe is currently sketchy, so we are including everything we have (including UUCP data). All links are currently assumed to be bidirectional. Links are usually UUCP links, but in some cases other kinds of links are used. It is our intention to post future copies of the map in this format, rather than the one-line format previously used. The directory will be posted at the beginning of each month beginning in February. Karen and Mark Horton cbosgd!map
