Dave Formula appears on a 12" single I picked up just last night. It's
a pop tune called "Theoretical China" by someone named Winston Tong. The
B-side is a long (>16 min) spacy tune. Sorry I can't say more, but I've
only heard it once. Lots of Japanese musicians. Anyone know more about
Winston Tong?

Winston Tong has sung on at least three Tuxedomoon albums (Desire, Holly Days,
and Suite en Sous-Sol). He has a very strong voice and lends a lot to the
group's music.

If anyone is interested, Tuxedomoon is a group that was with Ralph for a
couple of years. They had three songs on Ralph's Subterranean Modern
collection, and three Ralph Albums (Half-Mute, Desire, and a collection
of songs from these albums and some singles called "A Thousand Lives by
Picture"). In addition, they have released at least two albums on other
labels (the aforementioned Holly Days and Suite en Sous-Sol) and a few
singles as well.

The group relies mostly on music, which is mostly synthesized with some
fantastic guitar work. Vocals are used as additional instruments; at least,
I can't say that they have that much meaning. They are kind of similar to
modern poetry (which I can't make much sense of; then again, I liked the
Attractions without Elvis Costello).

Since the subject of the original letter was Magazine, I'll mention a
coule of nice items I found over the years. I once found a copy of
the original "Shot By Both Sides" single (b/w "My Mind Ain't So Open").
This version uses no keyboards; an extra guitar part is used instead,
which makes the song much more powerful. Also, I found an album called
"Back To Nature", which is a live album from the 1979 tour (during which
I missed seeing them by two stupid days). The sound quality is pretty
good (considering the general quality of bootlegs) and the band sounds
great.

If memory serves, Winston Tong was (still is?) the vocalist for the Ralph
(now Crepescule) artists Tuxedomoon. He joined them as of their second
album (Desire). Many people I know think he killed the band. ("Why are
we all living dying to die?")

Winston Tong has primarily sung and performed with Tuxedomoon. I am pleased
to say that that group has a brand new LP titled Holy Wars -- excellent
music from them as always, although this time out I found the lyrics to be
somewhat stilted at times. Still, very much worth obtaining.

I recently found a complete Tuxedomoon LP which I had never before seen:
the music for a ballet called Divine. The song "Ninotchka" (which I have seen
on a 12" single many times) is from this soundtrack. The record is on
Operation Twilight Records, I believe. Anyone know anything about this?
