This is the current map of Usenet, incorporating all changes received by the date given. Please send corrections (and all changes to the configuration of Usenet) to "cbosgd!map". A blank entry means that the information for that site is unknown - if you see a blank entry you know the answer to, please let us know. Anything you would like to add to make information more specific is welcome - for example, if a site is just listed as "Bell Telephone Laboratories", we would prefer to list them as "Bell Labs, Columbus Operating System Group". We simply don't have the information to fill in for most sites. Usenet is defined as all sites receiving newsgroup net.general. A Usenet link between two sites is one that net.general is sent over. Note that this is different from a UUCP link, over which mail and file transfers may occur but not necessarily news. (We count the links to Europe even through they don't get net.general - we're going to have to change the definition, perhaps to net.announce.) The format of the map lists several mail-style header lines for each site. The lines are Name: the official site name, with optional nicknames Organization: the name of the company, university, or group Contact: the name of the Usenet contact person for the site Phone: the telephone number of the contact person Postal-Address: the paper mailing address of the contact person Electronic-Address: for the contact person News: neighbors this site sends net.general to Mail: sites for which there is a UUCP link or other ! syntax link. Continuation lines begin with a blank or tab. A blank line separates each site entry. The UUCP line in most cases is blank, allowing for future expansion. We are not currently collecting UUCP data, so please do not send us UUCP additions. Send UUCP information to cbosgd!uucpmap, which is handled by different people. We simply don't have the information to fill in for most sites. The July 1 distribution reflects the results of a sendsys request sent out in early June. We only got responses from about half the sites on Usenet. There has been a minor format change (again). File names are now prefixed with the country, thus nj is now usa.nj, on is now can.on. Europe has been subdivided into separate files for each country, with the "eur" prefix. On an experimental basis, we are including Britain's PSS sites in eur.gb.pss. Usenet is defined as all sites receiving newsgroup net.general. A Usenet link between two sites is one that net.general is sent over. Note that this is different from a UUCP link, over which mail and file transfers may occur but not necessarily news. #R:cbosgd:-67200:uiucuxc:11800009:000:906 uiucuxc!Anonymous Dec 6 11:08:00 1983 The maps are much appreciated. I was able to search the lists yesterday for an organization which provided a telephone number that led me to the person I was after. The only problem is that it took me 45 minutes as I didn't know the state so had to go throught the whole list(1200 baud). I was wishing and thinking it would be nice if I could use the search feature of the notesfile (x and X). It would have saved a considerable amount of my time to be able to type in the organization and have the search feature go directly to it. Unfortunately, I don't see a way this can be done. Can some wizard out there come up with a way of using existing features of the notesfiles sytem to do this? Or perhaps even reorgainizing how the list of firms is sent out to take advantage of the search capability. For those without notesfiles, the x feature searchs for a string in the title-not througout the note.

When the net maps come in, I save them, one state per file, in a subdirectory of /usr/help. Then, people can use grep to find ones they are interested in. =Spencer
wls@astrovax.UUCP (12/08/83)
I would have made this a reply except I am not sure if an account with a name like uiucuxc!Anonymous really exists as a mail receiving account. Try saving all of the articles in net.news.map in a directory and running "grep" on them. Or, better yet, take these saved files and run the shell on them to extract the files they contain (they are organized as shell archives). Or, even better, your site administrator should do this as a public service and keep the results in a standard place. I do that here, the results (updated whenever the new version comes in) are kept in /usr/pub/map/sites. To find a site type: fgrep 'e: SITENAME' * to find the file. Once you have found the file type more FILENAME and then: /e: SITENAME Bill Sebok Princeton University, Astrophysics {allegra,akgua,burl,cbosgd,decvax,ihnp4,kpno,princeton}!astrovax!wls -- Bill Sebok Princeton University, Astrophysics {allegra,akgua,burl,cbosgd,decvax,ihnp4,kpno,princeton}!astrovax!wls

Note that this is different from a UUCP link, over which mail and file transfers may occur but not necessarily news. The format of the map lists several mail-style header lines for each site. The lines are Name: the official site name, with optional nicknames Organization: the name of the company, university, or group Contact: the name of the Usenet contact person for the site Phone: the telephone number of the contact person Postal-Address: the paper mailing address of the contact person Electronic-Address: for the contact person News: neighbors this site sends net.announce to Mail: sites for which there is a UUCP link or other ! syntax link. Continuation lines begin with a blank or tab. A blank line separates each site entry. The Mail line in most cases is blank, allowing for future expansion. We are not currently collecting Mail data, so please do not send us Mail additions. Send Mail information to cbosgd!uucpmap, which is handled by the UUCP Project. echo x - README cat >README <<'!Funky!Stuff!' Note - starting this month, the map is posted to mod.map.news, rather than net.news.map. This is the current map of Usenet, incorporating all changes received by the first of this month. Please send corrections (and all changes to the configuration of Usenet) to "cbosgd!map". A blank entry means that the information for that site is unknown - if you see a blank entry you know the answer to, please let us know. Anything you would like to add to make information more specific is welcome - for example, if a site is just listed as "AT & T Bell Laboratories", we would prefer to list them as "AT & T Bell Labs, Columbus Operating System Group". We simply don't have the information to fill in for many sites. The European portion of this directory is maintained in Europe, the map for Great Britain is maintained in Great Britain, and the Australian portion is maintained in Australia - we merely include information sent to us in this distribution. Send corrections for Great Britain to ucl-cs!uucpmaster; send corrections for the continent to mcvax!piet; and send corrections for Australia to decvax!mulga!kre.
