APOLOGIES TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY SEEN THIS. I HAVE GOTTEN NO RESPONSE AND IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS IS NOT GETTING THROUGH, AND I AM TRYING THIS AGAIN. I would like to get some feedback about work that is being done on interactive editor-formatters. Specifically, I am interested in views on a number of issues which I have listed below. 1) There has been a number of articles discussing the interface of a number of these interactive editor-formatters (abbreviated as i.e-f) which are currently under development at various academic and research institutions. I am especially interested in those that are being designed for office workstations although this should not deter response to more general i.e-f. Can people out there give me some ideas about progress in these and other i.e-f (e.g. ETUDE (MIT), PEN (Yale), POLITE (IBM), STAR (Xerox)) since last year. 2) Many of the above i.e-f utilize an hierarchical data structure which is central to edit, format, and display operations. I would like to know whether other data structures (e.g. graph) have been considered in other systems? If so, which ones and why? Systems using hiearchical data structures; how difficult are they when implementing them and what kind of response times or performance times are you getting? 3) Most literatures that I have read have been relatively high-level. I would like to get some pointers to literatures concerning redisplay techniques, formatting schemes, representation, and window management for high resolution bit mapped displays. Views and experiences with designing, developing, and using these i.e-f systems will also be appreciated. Also, pointers to more recent articles (this year) describing abovementioned i.e-f and others will also be appreciated. I have just recently become interested in i.e-f and apologize for my lack of knowledge. Hopefully, this will help me to get abreast of recent developments. Please respond by mailing directly to me (path is provided). If there are enough respondents or interest, I will post a summary as well as a bibliography of papers I get.
