I consider it to be pretty good French Champagne. ------------- >From harpo!eagle!mhuxt!mhuxa!mhuxh!mhuxm!pyuxjj!pyuxdd!pyuxmm!gog Wed Dec 8 19:53:56 1982 remote from floyd Date: 8 Dec 82 19:44:14 EST (Wed) To: pyuxdd!pyuxjj!mhuxm!mhuxh!mhuxa!mhuxt!eagle!harpo!floyd!peri!andy Subj: champagnes My favorite in the range described is Mumms Extra Dry. Mumms Cordon Rouge is also quite wonderful, but usually more expensive. In particular, if you like a strong Riesling, Hans Kornell Sehr Trocken is quite good and should come in at $15 or less. Schramsberg is the classic "best" in California, and in most stores should be within your range. It's made by the Methode Champenoise (sp?) and supervised by the Head of Caves at Moet Chandon (the French guys in the last article). The best part is it costs $11 to $15 per bottle. A super wine at a super price. Vic Lee -- St. Olaf College I hear their Blanc de Noirs is good, but haven't had a chance to try it. ------------ >From harpo!npoiv!npois!houxm!houxa!houxi!houxz!ihps3!ihnp4!ihuxk!alexisp Mon Dec 6 19:57:33 1982 remote from floyd Date: 6 Dec 82 19:50:55 EST (Mon) To: ihnp4!ihps3!houxz!houxi!houxa!houxm!npois!npoiv!harpo!floyd!peri!andy Subject: champagne without more information on your tastes, this is impossible... however, if you are like 99.9% of americans, the champagne you grew up with was one of those cheap, sickly sweet varieties from CA. I have found that good french champs is too dry by far for the american palate..I still drink it at home, but when buying a gift, I go for one of the sweeter french sparkling wines, such as a BLANC DE BLANCS, Bouvet, etc. (anything from france that LOOKS like champagne but is labelled "Methode Champenoise"). you'll find that these are inexpensive, and better liked. if you insist, all the major champagne houses are excellent: Moet & Chandon, Taittinger, Heidsieck, Dom Perignon(expensive). As the wine gets drier, the price goes up. some of the expensive CA ch. is also pretty good, although I don't remember brands...you get what you pay for! enuff... alexis porras ps: there's always Miller high life, the "Champagne of Beers"! --------- >From harpo!decvax!minow Mon Dec 6 23:55:59 1982 remote from floyd Date: 6 Dec 82 23:56:29 EST (Mon) To: harpo!floyd!peri!andy Try Freixenet (Cordon Negro Brut). Great stuff. Cheap. Leaves a hell of a hangover if you drink too much. In your price range, check out Chandon and Schramsburg (spelling?) It was served at a champaign tasting here, and got very good price/performance ratings. I suggest you try a bottle before the holiday season, and buy more if you like it.
