[net.wines] removing labels

hstrop (02/22/83)

I tried to send mail directly to the person who asked about wine
labels, but uucp is awfully cranky these days. I'm posting this to
the net in the hopes that the message( if not the mail ) will
get thru...

I can't say anything really about the latter point, except to beware
of generalizations. A lot of really fine German wines use labels
affixed with library paste, others of similar quality use better glues.

On the first point, I have a lot of success using live steam rather than
boiling water. Some California wine labels are notoriously difficult,
if not impossible to remove,eg. Beringer and Sutter Homes. I visited
Sutter Homes recently and found out that they use stick on adhesive labels.
This explains my lack of success in removing the labels, and doesn't
bode well for label collectors if other wineries follow suit. Sutter Homes
did give me samples of their labels however when I told them what I
wanted them for, so there could be an alternative answer there.

Hope I've been helpful...
