[Reprinted without permission from the 2/28 issue of U.S.A. Today] Wine connoisseurs are impressed...by the $331,500 spent Saturday at Christie's ninth quarterly fine and rare wine auction at the Chicago Casino Club. The total was higher than expected, indicating that the market for wines is strong. About 200 buyers attended the auction, where all but four of the 501 lots offered were sold. Average price per lot: $663. Top sales included a single bottle of 1945 Romanee Conti that went for $1,050; a bottle of 1865 Chateau Lafite for $2,500; a case of 1961 Chateau Lafite for $3,200; and a bottle of 1945 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild for $680. The top-selling American wine was Heitz Cabernet Sauvignon, Anniversary 1974, which went for $850 a case. * * David Bryant AT&T Bell Laboratories * Columbus, OH 43213 * (614) 860-4516 * . . djb@cbosgd.UUCP cbosgd!djb@Berkeley.ARPA * *
