[net.wines] Good cheap wines: discussion and nomination

gordon@cae780.UUCP (Brian Gordon) (04/02/84)

[Living sacrifice to assuage the gods of first lines . . .]

I second chuqui's suggestion that we have a discussion of cheap good wines,
but I put "cheap" at less than (or darn little more than) $5, regardless of
student status. There seem to be at least two areas of possible confusion,
however -- price and "goodness".

Due to wildly different tax laws, as well as transportation costs, a wine
which is $4 in CA could easily be $8 in SC. There are similar differences
with NY and OH wines, etc. Thus price is VERY regional; keep that in mind.

The problem of goodness is a bigger one. There is a lot of Ripple and
Boone's Farms wine sold, so lots of people must think it is good. Even
among wine "experts", there is room for disagreement about which wines are
better than others. It is, after all, strictly a matter of taste. In fact,
many devotees of white wine consider "good red wine" to by an oxymoron,
with similar feelings among (us) red wine fans.

Thus "cheap" is regional at best, and "good" is very personal. Thus, when
giving a recommendation, please try to give the local price, what kind of
wine it is (if it isn't obvious from the name), and some indication of why
you like it -- e.g. unique characteristics regardless of price, as good as
brand xxx at twice the price, etc.

After all this introduction, my overall favorite cheap wine in a "big" red,
Monterey Vinyards Classic California Red - 1981. It is available in the
S.F.Bay area at under $4.00 and compares quite well with $10-$15 Cabernets.
It has very little aging potential, but is great for drinking the day you
buy it.

More suggestions, please.

Brian Gordon has a good point. From this point on let us require that to be
considered on this topic a wine has to have a cork. Otherwise its just
funny tasting fruit juice. *giggle*
