[net.wines] Sangria

matt@oddjob.UChicago.UUCP (Matt Crawford) (06/11/84)

I don't know anything about Moraine Coolers, but here's my Sangria recipe.

1.5 liter of Torres' "Sangre de Toro"
2-3 big oranges and 2-3 lemons

Slice several thin slices out of the middle of each orange and lemon,
then squeeze the rest for juice. Add the juice to the wine in a big
glass pitcher or, lacking that, a bowl. Add sugar to taste. Add ice.
(Cooling the wine first reduces the amount of ice needed.) Add the
fruit slices. You can put the smaller fruit slices on the rims of the
glasses for that silly party appearance, but in my opinion they just
get in the way.

N.B.: Avoid any product which has extra letters or apostrophes in the
word "sangria" as stridently as you would avoid a "Choclaty Chip"
       cookie.

Try this one Fishell:

1 gallon of cheap red wine
1 pint of cheap brandy
All sorts of fruit, cut up
Some sugar

Mix everything up in a gallon and a half
container. Add sugar to taste. Add two trays
of ice. Place in fridge for at LEAST 24 hours.
Remove and imbibe.

The portions and directions may not be too clear,
but this stuff is both smooth and potent. The
brandy is what makes the difference.

Now, that's what I consider a reasoned balanced
response that considers all viewpoints and perspectives.

The referenced recipe for sangria (Spanish red wine, oranges, lemons)
is a close approximation to the recipe I remember being used during
the time that I lived in Barcelona (just north of the Penedes district,
where Torres wines originate), but you're missing an important
ingredient -- they used a cup of brandy for each 1.5 litre bottle of
wine, and NO SUGAR (most American "sangrias" use sweetener!).

For what it's worth, here's my Sangria recipe (adapted from La Cocina,
Pittsfield MA):

750 ml red wine (Lambrusco works well)
   3/4 c. orange juice
   1 jigger (1.5 oz.) brandy
       " " Triple Sec
   Various sliced fruits

Mix liquids; float fruits on top; chill.
