I received a mailing the other day advertising The California Wine Experience. Since there was some interest in this group a couple weeks ago about this event, I thought I'd post some information. "America's Premier Wine Event," as they bill it, is being held this year at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco on October 26, 27, 28, and 29, 1984. The evening of Friday Oct 26 features a "spectacular gala of food, wine and music" called "the Streets of San Francisco". On Saturday the 27th, the morning begins with a speech by Rodney D. Strong on "A Historical Perspective on California Winemaking," a speech by Hugh Johnson "On Wine," and a tasting of three California Chardonnays and three white Burgundies with a panel discussion to follow. Then there is a luncheon, with speakers Tom and Dick Smothers and Pat Paulsen talking on the subject "From Hollywood to Vine." On Saturday afternoon there is "a comprehensive tasting of German Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese from great vintages." Saturday finishes with an evening tasting featuring new releases from over 100 California wineries. Sunday's schedule is equally hectic. There are two sessions running simultaneously. Session A has three parts: a seminar on Wine Collecting and Professional Wine Buying, a speech by Warren Winiarski on "The Story of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars," and a talk on "The Changing Tastes of America's Wine Consumers" by Leonce Picot of The Down Under Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale. Session B also has three parts: a speech on "Wine Food and Restaurants" by Narsai David of Narsai's Restaurant in Berkeley, "The Story of Ridge" by Paul Draper of Ridge Vineyards, and repeat of the Wine Collector and Professional Wine Buyer seminar. Luncheon follows, with Paulsen and the Smothers Brothers repeating their speech, and the afternoon feathres a blind horizontal tasting of eight 1974 California Cabernet Sauvignons conducted by J. Michael Broadbent of Christie's in London. In the evening there is another "Grand Tasting" featureing the new releases from the 100 California Wineries [in case you didn't get to try all of them the previous evening :-) -dlb]. The final day, Monday October 29, features "The Wine Spectator's 4th Annual 'Grand Award' Banquet" honoring those restaurants which receive the magazine's Grand Award for having the greatest wine lists in America. This is a black tie event. Now that I've whetted everyone's appetite, here's the bad news. Prices. There are several registration options. Complete Registration for all the events described above is $475.00 per person. There is a Weekend Registration option, which skips the Grand Award Banquet, for $375.00 per person. You can register only for the Grand Award Banquet for $150.00 per person. You can register for only the Saturday and Sunday luncheons and attend both for $100.00 per person. Or you can attend one or both of the Saturday and Sunday evening tastings for $25.00 per person per night.
