In my never ending quest for the perfect Zinfandel, I tried a bottle of Lytton Springs 1980 over the Labor Day weekend. I was quite impressed. The wine has a jammy bouquet (I never thought I'd use the term 'jammy', but that really describes it. I've never had a wine before that I would have called jammy). This is not to imply that it had a sweet smell or taste, because it was fairly dry. It was just fruity and loaded with flavor. Burgess has loads of flavor too, but very differently. Burgess is peppery and spicey, while the Lytton was smooth and fruity. I picked up another bottle yesterday, and unfortunately it was not as good as the first. The second bottle had a very slight fizz to it, apparently from a little undesired fermentation in the bottle. It also was more astringent than the first. It sells for $9.99 at Post Road Liquors in Wayland, MA. Has anyone else tried this wine? I hope my first bottle was the norm and not a freak good bottle... The 1980 Lytton Spring Zin is indeed in my opinion one of the best Zins around. It's one of those that really shouts ZIN! when you drink it, so its hard to find food to match. The 1979 is even better, but it was already in short supply when I discovered it. I got the lasr three bottles at the winery they had. I have a case of the 80, but don"t plan to start drinking it until 88. Herman Silbiger .'
