[net.wines] Georges B. Latour and the French Challenge

c-hunt@tesla.UUCP (Charles Hunt) (10/01/84)

In response to the user who pointed out that not all noted wine critics share
my laud and admiration for '79 BV Georges B. Latour Private Reserve Cabernet
(eg. Bob Parker of Wine Advocate), let me jump to agree that it IS indeed a
matter of personal taste (I have disagreed with Parker before), and the real
bottom line is to try it yourself (it's certainly worth the "risk": we're
talking about a difference of opinion as to if the wine takes you ten feet
off the ground, or shoots you to the stratosphere... either way, it's a
quality jug). If you like it, the case price will never be lower. But gosh,
I have to plug what I like: that's what makes horse racing.

The responder's second point is really true: the price of 81 Bordeaux makes
buying California wine seem a waste of money right now. Wines I've tried
and firmly reccommend: '81 Pichon-Lelande ($16), '81 Lynch Bages ($11... and
a fabulous wine), '81 Smith Haut Lafitte ($8), '81 Talbot ($9). Nothing
coming out of CA right now compares for value. Prices are NYC; places to go
if in the city: Sherry-Lehmann, Acker-Merrall, Garnet Liquor, Morrell Wine
Emporium... all in easy access to midtown visitors. Also, Zachy's in
Scarsdale. All of the above are incredible: rich, aromatic, full, full on
finish, and a STEAL. BV has its place, but Bordeaux is the best deal now.

Drink moderately: live long! {blah blah}!tesla!c-hunt
