[net.wines] Cheap Dry White

rjw@ptsfc.UUCP (Rod Williams) (12/11/84)

Since postings to net.wines have been few and far between
recently, I thought I'd try to get it going again. Forgive
me if I'm bringing up a subject which has been done to
death in the past, but I'm a relatively recent netter and
haven't seen this before.

What cheap, dry white wines do you netters imbibe?
What do you pay for them?
Why do you like them (if you like them!)?

My *House White* is usually Gallo's Sauvignon Blanc - my
corner liquor store sells a magnum (1.5 litres) for $4.69.
For a cheap, bulk wine it shows remarkable varietal
character - it's light, dry and slightly grassy.

I also like Riverside Farm (Foppiano) Premium Dry White at
around $4 for a magnum. It's got a lot of French Colombard
in it, but avoids the sickly sweetness often associated with
that grape.

While a bit higher in price, I highly recommend Glen Ellen
Proprietor's Reserve Chardonnay. It is dry, well-balanced,
and really tastes like a chardonnay. "Appley" might be the
most descriptive word, definitely not "oaky" or "buttery."
I think it lists for $4.99 (750ml) but can be found for
as little as $3.19!

My house wine, a Medium Dry White, is

	Wente Le Blanc de Blanc

	usually around $3 / bottle

Theres a Frascati from Fontana Candida which I started buying recently.
Many friends have agreed that it's a really nice light white for not
much money (about $4 a bottle).

One of my favorite house wines is North Coast Chenin Blanc. It
sells for $2 per bottle. It is a good light dry wine.

I suggest Chateau Esperanza White Table Wine, if you can find it.
It is a very enjoyable fruity, semi-dry wine. I have had it with
food and by itself. It goes for about $6.50 for the 1.5 litre bottle.

Let me take this chance to sing the praises of all the wines from
this small NY state winery. All of the ones I have had (7) have been
some of the best wines I have ever tasted. They are all inexpensive
and not plagued by the usual "make it taste like Concord" mentality
of this state's wineries. They also make the only true dry Rose that
I have ever been able to find. If it's available where you are, grab
any bottle from Chateau Esperanza!

P.S. If anyone would be interested in the results of a recent trip
to small NY state Finger Lake's wineries, let me know. If the
demand is there, I will post a report.
