I dropped into my local wine shop on Sunday to sample four California Cabernet Sauvignons. If I had used my head instead of my palate, I would have taken notes about vineyards and prices to make this posting more informative. Nevertheless...the wines were: Iron Horse (1982 ~$7) - smooth, but rather lightweight with not much varietal character - nice enough, but I've had better *House Reds* for a lot less money. William Hill (1982 ~$8) - I found this quite unpleasant with a strong vegetal flavor, something like olives (which I much prefer in a martini :-)) Vichon (1981 ~$11) - very pleasant wine, medium-bodied and well-balanced with a lot of berry flavor and noticeable tannin - should age quite well. Cakebread (1981 ~$14) - quite delicious. I tasted their 1980 about a year ago and found it a bit rough, so approached this without high hopes. It turned out to be a charmer - smooth, full-bodied, lots of fruit, a hint of spice and an almost perfume-y aftertaste - very complex and very satisfying. Slainte, -- Rod Williams dual!ptsfa!ptsfc!rjw
