[net.wines] How about a wine tasting?

kadler@bbncc5.UUCP (Kyle Adler) (12/19/85)

It's encouraging to see some traffic to this group after a few weeks'
silence. A wine tasting might be a good way to get more people involved.
(This has been done on CompuServe for a while now.)

The idea is this: We choose a wine that is not terribly well-known, but is
readily available all over. The price should be affordable, even by students
and hackers. One possible (albeit somewhat arbitrary) choice would be Kenwood
Winery's Chenin Blanc 1981; it's easy to find and only about $5, but most
people haven't tried it. We then allow a couple of weeks for everybody
interested to try the wine. Then the wine is discussed on the net, in an
open and unmoderated way.

Please mail me your comments, pro or con, along with suggestions for a
first wine to taste. If there is sufficient interest I will post a follow-
up article giving the name of the wine selected to taste. How about it?

   Might I suggest: ...
- an '83 or '84. These were very good (white) vintages, also might be
easier to find than an older wine (I'm not sure on this, being a CA
native. Out east, do you folks get the current releases (We're seeing
mostly '84's now) early, or do they take a while to drift eastward ??)
- a Chard or Sauv Blanc may provide more to talk about, esp in terms
of complexity and longevity. That might move it to $5 "or so", though,
but for a special occasion like this...

  Any further thoughts ??
