[net.rumor] Results of a security lapse

pcl (06/17/82)

I've just heard, from a generally unreliable source, that at least one
person has been fired and several others reprimanded at DEC in the wake
of the recent leak of the specifications for the previously secret
VAX 11/810. If anyone at decvax is still allowed to use netnews,
perhaps they could comment.

There are two theories on security, to give them arbitrary names:

The DG method: Squash rumors, Hide secrets, Enforce no-talking to
outsider rules, Fascist eyes-only dissemination.

The DEC method: Let the rumors fly, keep changning the functional
spec, let the competiors try and cover all the things we seem to
be doing. People around DEC get used to the fact that everything
in the PHASE III release wasn't in the PHASE I and the stuff in
PHASE I has been decomitted (and that what is being shipped to
the customers is really a bunch of midnight 1+'s and none
of the committed stuff got done anyway).
