Am I wrong, or was there a note in this group a few weeks ago noting that Intel was rumored to be having trouble with the 186 and was considering urging its 186 customers to move to the 286? Anyone who can comment (particularly with sources) has my thanks. Mike Kelly @ Teletype - Skokie, ILLINOIS ..ihnp4!tty3b!mjk

#R:tty3b:-18000:uiuccsb:13900001:000:386 uiuccsb!grunwald Aug 25 19:22:00 1983 There was a note in net.micros about the 186. It was from an INTEL guy who said that the 186 was being supported and that all the information about documented errors in the chip design are being distributed with the chips. He seemed to feel that the 186 is for a different market than the 286. You might want to check out that notesfile and see if your machine still has the article.

I spoke to an Intel representative about the 186 problems and he vehemently denied any plans to cancel the '186. He said that there are some problems with the current chip, but that a fix is in the works. I don't know how credible this response is, but I do know of some designers using the '186 and the problems have not hampered their work to any great extent. BTW, the '286 would not satisfy any persons who planned on using the '186. The '186 is an 8086 with peripherals (Interrupt controller, timers, address decoders, DMA controller) while the '286 is an 8086 with virtual memory capability.
