[net.rumor] Apple and Macintosh

johnc@dartvax.UUCP (John Cabell) (01/09/84)

Apple hasn't been that silent about the Mcintosh. Dartmouth
colledge has contracted to buy *LOTS* of Macintoshes from them,
one for every incoming fresmen in 1984! It's part of their new
program wich all freshmen have to have or get a micro and if
they are getting one, the price will be added on to their
tuition.

What John says is not quite accurate. Yes, we did contract to
buy Macs and Lisas from Apple at a substantial discount. We did not
hand out specs to anyone and only those very high up in the decision
making got to deal directly with the facts. I worked in the office
that handles the distribution of information and support for micro
computers at Kiewit and we knew very little of what was going on
save that it looked like it was going to be the Mac. We did *not*
get specs, hands on experience, or anything else of that nature.
So I tend to agree with the origional statement: Apple backed off
into secrecy. We still do not have specs or an actual machine ...

If Dartmouth has contracted to buy a large number of McIntoshes
for use by many freshman in the fall, not knowing, at this late
date, what the quality, performance, or specs of this machine will be,
then they may well, as Dave Kovar says, be:

	Doing the impossible today.

I should clarify my statement about our knowledge of Macs:
We assume someone above us knows what they are doing, but the lower
ranks have little idea what it is. Which, as someone happily pointed
out, fits in nicely with my .signature .
