I heard the following two (related) rumors. 1) Richard Stallman was going to Berkley. consequence: there would soon be a free emacs for the VAX. 2) He was starting work on a programming environment GNU (GNU is Not UNIX). I was wondering what he was, in fact, doing. Also, was he accepting help or commentaries on GNU. The concept of an operating system/editor/programming environment written by Stallman (a la emacs) is facinating, and I would like to get in on it. Please send me any information or leads that you have. reg -- reg (Reg Hody, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. B3H 4H8) ({...decvax}!dartvax!dalcs!hody)

Some time ago I heard the following two rumors: 1) Richard Stallman was going to Berkley, and since he doesn't like emacs' that you have to pay for, was going to write an emacs for the VAX. 2) He was starting work on GNU (GNU is Not UNIX), an operating system/ programming environment/editor. The concept of such a (I don't know what to call it) is facinating and I would like to find out more about it. So... If anybody out there can give me any information or leads I'd really appreciate it. -- reg (Reg Hody, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. B3H 4H8) ({...decvax}!dartvax!dalcs!hody)

Why don't you ask him yourself? I'm sure he would be more than happy to spout his philosophy and future plans to anyone who would listen. His network address is RMS@MIT-OZ (via the arpanet). I suppose you could reach him through our UUCP gateway: decvax!genrad!mit-eddie. Eddie and OZ talk to each other over the local chaosnet.

Well, Richard has been seen logged into UCB-ARPA over the ARPANET from MIT quite a bit lately. Perhaps GNU will be blessed with a modicum of Berkeley VAX/UNIX. At least, if he's sensible, it will be... Erik E. Fair ucbvax!fair fair@ucb-arpa.ARPA
