The misconception comes from these two FACTS -- both are true: 1) Coffee has more caffeine than tea. True -- a cup of your average coffee contains much more caffeine than a cup of your average tea. 2) Tea has more caffeine than coffee. True -- X grams of raw tea leaves contain more caffeine than X grams of coffee beans.
