[net.rumor] Use of the name Bell today

sr@u1100a.UUCP (Steven Radtke) (05/22/84)

>> Reminding people that AT&T and Bell are now separate isn't going to
>> change popular habits one bit, so it's really wasted effort.

WELL, I'm not sure it's wasted effort AND the breakup is not that long
ago SO I think it's proper for those of us struggling to establish our
new corporate identity to insist the world learn and use the new names
of all the companies that USED to be one Bell System.

If its not important to you and it IS important to us, why not humor us,
and respect our wishes.

What I find sickening and disgusting is the use by every BOC
executive who gets on TV of the term "Bell System." Someone
needs to tell <them> that there is <no> Bell System anymore.
Nowhere. The BOCs have been specifically enjoined from forming
a "system". AT&T-whatever is not the Bell System either.

No matter how many times an AT&T person flames at me, and no
matter how many millions of dollars AT&T spends on advertising
to convince me otherwise,

AT&T WILL ALWAYS BE MA BELL IN MY MIND!

It is a waste of time and of the network to try to get people
to use AT&T instead of Bell.

(I wonder if my phone service will be cut off because of this? :-))

Actually, they'll go back and fix up history so that Alexander Graham Att
invented the telephone (shades of 1984).

Yes, but you got it mixed up: 1894, not 1984.

As George Carlin once said, "Aren't you glad his name wasn't Alexander
Graham Siren?"

No, it won't. But we're going to fix your phones so that instead of
ringing when someone calls you, they whisper, "AT&T! AT&T!"

If "Bell" is such a dirty word, why are we still building phones with
bells in them?

Growing ever more confused....

I still hear bells!

Here it's BellSouth (the BOC) or Soutern Bell!

Either way, they still *ring up* the ol' cash register at bill
paying time!!!   :-}
