[net.rumor] RAINBOW rear-window decals spreading across the country!

dob@ihuxj.UUCP (Daniel M. O'Brien) (06/22/84)

How about a new rumor to end the week with?

I am sure everybody has seen one of those RAINBOW decals that are stuck
to the rear windows of, perhaps, thousands of cars. But did you ever
wonder WHAT they mean?, WHERE they came from?, and WHY people put
them on their cars?

Well, I recently heard that the RAINBOW decal is an insignia for
some underground religious cult based in California that is quickly
spreading across the entire country!

I found this explanation funny, because I got *my* RAINBOW decal in
Santa Cruz, California, where it just happens to be the logo for the
local Mass Transit District (spelled bus company). I noticed that most
cars in S. Cruz had one, which inspired me to buy one as a memento
of my trip to sunny CA (since I live in the mid-West).

Any other rumors and true life stories of the mysterious RAINBOW decals.

May the RAINBOW be with you.

I don't know if I should let the cat out of the bag or not, but
here goes anyway. The rainbow decals are our way of identifying
each other. We are all from the planet Xnorow and have been
living and multiplying on your planet for years. You remember
the stories about 'flying saucers'? They are true. Many others
have taken to putting our symbol in their rear windows, but
without knowing the secret hand signal, they will not be with
us when we make our final move for world domination. Our goal is
to one day turn on our powerful hyperbutonic, ifulation, ray gun
and zap every button, zipper, safety pin, velcro, and fastener
in the world. We will then take over. You can't very well
fight back with your drawers falling down around your feet.

I, too, have heard of the "Rainbow" religion. It has something to
do with a Fundementalist book about "the Aquarian Conspiracy."
The author was a woman, whose name escapes me for the moment. It
is all tied in with the TriLateral Commision and who knows who else.

It would be largely confined to a mere "cultic" status were it
not for the Fundementalist predisposition to read Revelation
(notice it's *singular*) as some sort of code-book.

I don't know about rainbows. Does anybody have an explanation for
the little spring loaded hands on suction cups?

Rainbow decals are a product of a company called Illuminations. They are
in the Boston area, in Cambridge -- I think. I am surprised nobody has
noticed the fnords yet.

From personal experience I know that the rumor about planet Xnorow is
true:
I, myself, have seen the rainbow stickers on the rear window of
more than one flying saucer!

reh1366@hou2b.UUCP (R.HOWARD) (06/28/84)

The RAINBOW decal started in California in the early 70's
when I was at grad school at Stanford. It was the symbol of
a group called the Creative Initiative Foundation.
This was an EST- style organization into self-actualization
(whatever that means). About the time I left Calif.,
they had changed into a political body with strongly
anti nuclear power leanings.

jlh@loral.UUCP (06/28/84)

I thought they were always around. I had one on my camaro when I was in
high school (1074-76). Maybe they started here in San Diego and are
just now getting to the east coast.

< I don' know, but I been tole, dat big leg woman aint got no sole >

A very good lady friend of mine has one of these things on her VW.
So I asked her: "Just where da ____ did ja get that anywho?".

So SHE says: "Well, there was this radio station in California that would
give you money if they saw you driving around with the sticker
and you heard your license number on the air."

So, of course, she got one.

How do these discussions get started?

This is the first I've heard of the "religious cult" rumor. However,
by pure coincidence, I happened to meet a guy about 2 months ago who
claimed to be the inventor of those rainbow decals. I can't verify
that, but he seemed like a sincere guy, and I *do* know that his
livlihood is derived from designing novelty items. He seems to do
relatively well at it...my understanding is that at this point the
idea is licensed to tons of companies which actually make the things.

The interesting point here is ... ... I met this guy while visiting a
supposedly "non-denominational retreat" which is actually somewhat
affiliated with a semi-cult religion. It is loosely based on some
combination of Indian Yogi teachings and the I Ching. I don't know
much about that stuff, but thought it an odd combination. Anyway, it's
really a low-key cult, it that's what you'd call it.

Oh, by the way, this "retreat" was in Southern California ("of course"
I hear all you easterners saying) not too far from San Diego.

I swear this is all true.

<this line intentionally left blank . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .>

Yes, I know the origin of the RAINBOW sticker. It isn't from a religious
cult, DEC, or someone's friend in San Diego. The RAINBOW sticker is the
symbol of the annual "Bumbershoot" arts festival held in Seattle (and has
been since ~1972). Stick THAT on your window.
