A new topic of discussion: Many states have strange laws still on the books. Some examples are: In Columbus Ohio, you supposedly can't eat corn flakes on Sunday. In Indiana, oral sex is illegal. Does anyone know of other oddball laws that still exist? Can anybody confirm the above two? Does anyone know of an example where this type of law is/was actually inforced? -- Scott Wiesner {allegra, ucbvax, cornell}!nbires!scott

There is a small town in Calif that enacted a law a few years ago that made it illegal for anyone to let off an atomic device within city limits. The law stipulated a fine of $500 or imprisonment for upto 6 months for the offence. ------ Shankar Unni {seismo!ucbvax!allegra!heurikon}!uwvax!unni

Unless they changed it recently, in Texas every public saloon has to provide a hitching post.

In my home town, an old mining community in Nothern Minnesota it is illegal to: (a) spit on the sidewalk (b) shoot off a cannon in the streets (c) let your livestock wander the streets alone after 8 pm How's that?

In North Carolina, it is illegal to walk on the highway right-of-way wearing a mask. I think the law was to prevent the KKK from roaming highways...

Here's a couple in Massachussetts. (I think!) When driving your "horseless carriage"(cars), you must stop at all intersections, walk to the center of the intersection to look both ways prior to crossing. (How flat I am, How flat I'll be, 'cause a car, ran over me.) No building may cast a continuous shadow on any place of worship (church). For this reason the John Handcock building had to be re-designed with a notch in it. (At no little expense, shows that these "Blue laws" can still be enforced). Any person of the "Roger Williams" (Rhode Island) colony may enter Massachussetts. If such a person is found on a Massachussetts common, s/he may be shot on sight. -- ------- Bill Duffy General Radio genrad!bolton!billd ---- Disclaimer ---- All opinions stated herein may or may not be those of my employer.

I don't know if it still reads the same, but Ontario used to have a law which in the same sentence prohibited: (i) Throwing garbage on the highway (ii) riding a horse furiously on the highway (iii) hitchhiking. I've never been able to figure out what these heinous practices are supposed to have in common. -- Martin Taylor {allegra,linus,ihnp4,floyd,ubc-vision}!utzoo!dciem!mmt {uw-beaver,qucis,watmath}!utcsrgv!dciem!mmt

New York State has some rather strange alcohol laws, which, unlike some other weird laws recently posted, are enforced. 1) Liquor and wine in New York are only sold in licenced liquor stores. They may sell nothing else. Notice, that I didn't mention beer. That's right, you have to go to two different stores to buy beer and wine in New York. (beer can be sold in supermarkets) 2) Beer may not be sold between 4:00am and 12:00 noon Sundays. Hard liquor (including wine) may not be sold between 2:00am and 8:00am Sundays. 3) Wine and liquor may not be sold within 200 feet of a school or church. church has no say in the matter, he may not legally tell the state "I don't care whether X's Restaraunt can serve wine with its meals" There is no restriction on wine/liquor sales within the church itself. (Don't know about schools)

Speaking of strange ones still on the books...in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where I went to school, you couldn't have a girl under 21 in the car with you with her shoes off. If you were caught, it was statutory rape. Now, I'm pretty sure the Stillwater police never went around looking for this one. But a lot of my friends, when caught for speeding, etc., made sure the girls in the car had their shoes on *before* pulling over...:-) Barefoot in the park, B.K. Cobb
