[net.rumor] IBM AT's unreliable?

I have been hearing lately that there have been some real problems with
reliability with the new IBM PC/AT computers. I was thinking about buying
one, but now I am thinking again. Does anybody out there have any info?
Thanks,

Well, our AT went belly up with problems with both it's hard disk and
floppies. Replacement of the controller, cables, power supply and
motherboard didn't fix it. It's still sick.

Yes, a little. The unreliability appears to be affecting only the 20 MB drives.
IBM appears to be having serious difficulty with its supplier of these drives.
If there's trouble in the hard disk drive, apparently, it only seems to show
its ugly head (pun intended) after 20-40 hours of continuous operation. The good
ones are very good; the bad ones are very bad.

How often, you may ask? Well, several of the Computerland stores around here
have been 10 good for 10 received; others quoted 3 good for 30 rcvd., and one
even got stuck with an entire shipment of 20 which all went south. The failure
rate overall appears to be on the order of 20-30% of the units shipped.
