I heard this from some guy in the local computer store. He seemed reliable and clamed to have on on order already. He said Apple will be coming out with a Turbo-Mac this Summer. It will contain up to 2MB ram, 68020 processor, color and an internal 960k double sided sony drive. He said the special price (for developers or dealers or something) will be $1800 dollars. He also said Apple will anounce that in is stopping to manufactue the Lisa computers Completely. -Gadi P.S. This is only a rumer, but he seemed like he knew what he was talking about....

Apple can only sell machines based on chips they can get in quantity. Somebody at Apple was saying that one reason the Mac didnt use a 10Mhz or 12.5Mhz clock was they couldnt get fast enough chips in the quantity they needed them. I somehow doubt that Apple is going to come out with a 68020 machine unless they did what IBM did with the 286 and make the chips themselves. As far as I know, Mototrola is sampling the 68020 right now. It will take them at least a year to get into volume production of chips with any speed (maybe Apple plans to use a 4Mhz 68020?). -- John McNamee ..!decvax!philabs!sbcs!bnl!jpm jpm@Bnl.Arpa

Summer might be a bit early, but end of the year might be reasonable. The suggestion of using a 4Mhz 68020 is an interesting point. Motorola claims that the slowest part will be 16.67Mhz maximum and can be clocked as slow as 8Mhz. What is motorola going to do with all the chips that will operate at 8Mhz but not up to the 16.67Mhz spec? They could be used as the basis of a very nice pc. I believe initial production of 68020's will be at 12.5MHz, with 16.7MHz to come some months afterward. The 68020 user's manual (MC68020UM(ADI)) contains AC electrical specs for both the MC68020R12 and the MC68020R16. Even if the two speeds are available at the same time, there will be a price difference. Plus a company like Apple would probably want to use the easier-to-build part, especially with no second source. Net.micro.* readers, see the net.rumor messages this one references.

First there was the Lisa, but it was too expensive and too slow after some time & thought, there was the Mac, but it wasn't big enough now there is a fat Mac, but it isn't fast enough soon there will the turbo Mac, which might be big enough and fast enough, but does this mean there will eventually be a Super-Hyper-Meta-Mac?
