This last week, I noticed that an imprint of a map of West Virginia with the number 1 had appeared on the top of my can of Shasta * diet soda. Well, I thought it must be some promotional contest (collect all 50 states). Then, I had a bottle of Faygo** soda, and lo and behold, on the bottle cap, an imprint of the state of West Virginia with the number 1 in it!!! Well, I've checked over all the numerous bottles and cans of soda I drink, and all that have the imprint have West Virginia.... So, what is this? Is the state of West Virginia launching a promotional campaign on the tops of soda cans and bottles? And why on these two brands? Has Faygo** become a subsidiary of Shasta without telling anyone? *Shasta is probably a trademark of the Shasta Corp. Hayward Ca. **Faygo is probably a trademark of Faygo Beverages, Detroit Mi. -- Laurie Sefton {harpo,ihnp4,allegra,decvax}!pur-ee!pucc-h!afo {decwrl}purdue!pur-ee!pucc-h!afo Unfortunately, my magicks have very little use in an industrialised society....

I think the outline of W. Virginia you saw was a tax stamp. If you didn't buy the pop in WV, I don't know why they taxed your soda. Bart Thielges

West Virginia taxes soft drinks at the rate of one cent per can. Thus the symbol is WV with a 1 inside. I'm not sure who is taxed or what the full law is. A lot of the cans here in Pittsburgh have the symbol also. -- Walter Smith, CS undergraduate, Carnegie-Mellon University uucp: ...!seismo!cmu-cs-k!wrs arpa: wrs@cmu-cs-k.ARPA usps: Box 874; 5115 Margaret Morrison St.; Pittsburgh, PA 15213

What a great way for a state to generate revenues. It taxes all items sold throughout the US; this is a much broader tax base than sticking to one's own borders. By being the first to think of this, W. Va has appropriated the #1 title. Who will be #2?

The cans of pop (soda?) around New England also have the imprint of West Virginia on them. As far as I know, West Virginia is not launching a promotional campaign on the tops of soda cans and bottles. However, West Virginia has always been #1 with me!
