I believe that the only man to steal first base was Germany Shaeffer, in the very early 1900's. The play started with Germany Shaeffer on first, and another runner on third. Germany signalled to the runner on third to try a double steal of second and home, but the opposing catcher held the ball, allowing Germany to steal second. Undaunted, he proceeded to steal first base so that they could try the double steal again. I believe that the second try at the double steal was successful. The information for this comes from an extremely entertaining book called "The Glory of Their Times", a compilation of interviews with professional baseball players from the last decade of the 1800's and the first few decades of this century.
