[net.sport.baseball] Getting to first base

glennp@bronze.UUCP (06/17/83)

What about when there is a runner, say on first base, and the batter
squares away to bunt...an obvious sacrifice. It is a perfect bunt,
and there is no play on the batter. Doesn't this go down as a sacrifice?
This may also come under the heading of fielder's choice, as it may be
scored as a sacrifice and a fielder's choice.

I always thought the best way to get to first base was

1. a romantic dinner
2. soft music
3. a little wine
      .
      .
      .

                               sorry, I couldn't resist

On the bunt situation you describe, here are the possible outcomes:

1) Both batter and runner are safe: batter gets a single
2) Runner is safe, batter is out on play to first: batter
   gets a sacrifice
3) Runner is out, batter is safe at first: fielder's choice.
4) Both batter and runner are out: good ol' double play.

	RE: sacrifices

A batter's at bat is only scored as a sacrifice if the following
conditions are met:

	1. The batter is put out by throw to first or caught fly
	ball.

	2. A runner scores from third. (note: this doesn't say
advances a base, he *must* score.)

alb@alice.UUCP (06/27/83)

A runner need not score for a batter to be credited with a
sacrifice. There are two types of sacrifice: SF (sac. fly)
and sac (sac. bunt) A batter gets a SF if ANY runner successfully
tags and advances; similarly, a batter gets a sac if ANY
runner successfully advances while the batter is thrown out.

The rule regarding sacrifice flies has changed many times over the years.
Usually it has flipflopped between a SF being credited only if a runner
scores and being credited if anyone advances. I think the present rule
is only on a score. It might change next year.

Believe it or not, a sacrifice fly once counted as a hit, resulting in grossly
inflated averages. This only lasted for a couple of years. I think
Hack Wilson was the chief beneficiary. By the way, does anyone know how
he caused an unassisted double play on a hit?

Check your rule book again. I won't swear to what it says
for the pro's but for college (NCAA) and down, the runner must score
for a sacrifice to be credited...

Wrong again. The two sacrifices have been confused.

Sacrifice Fly (SF):A fly ball is hit, and the runner scores. Note that someone
must score as a result of the fly ball, not necessarily from third.
Also, the batter need not be out, as the fielder could drop the ball.

Sacrifice Bunt (S):A bunt advancing a runner. No one need score; it is just
necessary that someone advance a base as a result of the bunt. Again,
the batter might be safe. For instance, the runner beats the throw
to second. In this instance, it is a S on a bunt, or a FC on a swing.
