I haven't heard what the ruling is yet, but it looks like the umps have covered their butts on this one. Contrary to what a previous submittor believes, the rules do allow Brett to be called out. It is done in the following way (rule numbers are approximate and may not be matched with the proper rule itself, which are themselves paraphrased): Rule 6.12 - Anything applied to more than 18" of the bat makes the bat illegal. Rule 2.00 - Any ball batted with a bat deemed illegal as per rule 6.12 is ruled an illegally batted ball. Rule ???? - Any batter who batted an illegally batted ball may be ruled out. Kinda like tracing thru a program, looking for a bug, huh? In any case, the umpires' report quotes all 3 rules, so it looks as tho the ruling should stand, as much as I hate to see it. I want the Yankees to lose as much as possible and open up the pennant race for the Orioles. Still, you got to hand it to Billy Martin.... Love those O's, Pete -- Call-Me: Pete Cottrell, Univ. of Md.
