Bowie Kuhn has decided not to give the owners any chance of belittling him any further, and has resigned as Baseball Commissioner. Thus ends a very colorful and controversial reign as Chief Executive of our nation`s pasttime. Bowie had his moments no doubt. His fueds with Charley Finley, from vetoing trades to reinstating a young 2nd baseman that Charlie O tried to get off the World Series roster cause he made a couple of errors in 1 game - Mike Andrews. Bowie brought the ballot back to the fans for the All-Star game. His administration saw the beginning of night games in the World Series, and also ran through 2 strikes, the second of which giving us that horrible split season which screwed the best team in baseball (W-L wise) out of the playoffs. He was in office for 14 years, longer than any of the other 4 commisioners except Landis. But now what happens?? Is there anyone that the owners can agree upon to succeed Kuhn? Hank Aaron has come out and said he`d like the job, but does he have enough business savvy? One thing for sure - we need a strong person who will keep the Commissioner`s office full of integrity. And what happens in the interim? That`s something I didn`t see in today`s newspaper. Who`s minding the store? Another thing for sure though, the store isn`t gonna close. So long, Bowie!
