While Wade Boggs has been feasting on American League pitching this season (.370), his fielding has been less than adequate. As of yesterday, he had been credited with 17 errors this season which keeps him in the race with the Dodgers' Steve Sax for miscues by a second year man. We may soon see Wade Boggs become one of the youngest designated hitters in history. Joe Twicken Bell Labs Whippany, NJ

This fine young third baseman is indeed in his second year, having replaced the traded Carney Lansford. Boggs reportedly had hit for high average in all of the minor leagues where he played. Two items of interest from the Boston press: he is an assiduous student of Ted Williams' book "The Art of Hitting", and he eats only chicken on the days of games. Seems he had chicken one night in the minors, and went 5-for-5, then 4-for-5 when he tried it again. He wife is claimed to have over 30 recipes for chicken. Has anyone noticed that he is leading the league in doubles? This from a hitter who doesn't hit with much power (only one homerun this year). I think he gets a lot of line drives down the line for these hits. Carl Eichenlaub Cornell University

Let's hear it for Wade Boggs, a true threat to hit .400 someday if not this year. His Lifetime average is absolutely astounding. I had heard that he has the highest active career average of anyone w/ 700 or more at-bats. No one else is even close. Let's go chicken man!! Being a died-in-the-wool Yankee hater it is nice to see Martin and his boys squirm a little bit while getting taken to the cleaners when they finally play the Division leaders.

Well Andy, in the AL East, everyone except Boston and Cleveland are division leaders. Keith Quarles houxo!3351dkq
